This video essay looks at examples from Gladiator, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Sherlock Holmes, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk to show how Hans Zimmer goes about creating unique sound worlds in his most popular soundtracks.
Unlike composers of the last century such as John Williams, Danny Elfman, or Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer is as much a Sound Designer, or Music Producer, as he is a traditional composer. This very much changes the way film composing is done, and changes what it means to be a film composer.
