Comedy film buffs, (such as myself) fondly remember the tongue-twister sequence in the (1955) film; "The Court Jester," starring Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Mildred Natwick and Robert Middleton. Kind-hearted entertainer 'Hawkins' who disguises himself as the legendary king of jesters, 'Giacomo.' Hawkins infiltrates the court of the evil villain, the King's closest adviser 'Lord Ravenhurst,' (played by Basil Rathbone) but when a sorceress hypnotises him, royal chaos ensues. As you'll remember in the film, 'Hawkins' prepares for a joust, -- with some very difficult lines. ... Danny Kaye plays the hapless carnival performer masquerading as the court jester, ("Giacomo, king of jesters and jester of kings") as part of a plot against an evil ruler who's overthrown the rightful king. (The "The Court Jester" starrs Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone, Angela Lansbury and Cecil Parker.)
Hawkins: "I've got it! I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! Right?"
Griselda: "Right. But there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace!"
Hawkins: "They *broke* the chalice from the palace?"
Griselda: "And replaced it with a flagon."
Hawkins: "A flagon...?"
Griselda: "With the figure of a dragon."
Hawkins: "Flagon with a dragon."
Griselda: "Right."
Hawkins: But did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle?"
Griselda: "No! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, -- The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!"
Hawkins: "The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true."
Griselda: "Just remember that."
BUT WAIT! * The Tongue-twister In "The Court Jester," Had A Predecessor:
Less well remembered, is a sequence from 16 years earlier, In the (1939) seminal film; "Never Say Die," starring Bob Hope, Martha Raye, Alan Mowbray, Victor Killian and Ernest Cossart. Bob Hope wrestled with a similar tongue-twisting dialog. (Hope duels unwillingly with Alan Mowbray, while Martha Raye tries to even the odds.) And So, -- Bob Hope prepares for a duel, -- with some very difficult lines. ...
"There's a cross on the muzzle of the pistol with the bullet, and a nick on the handle of the pistol with the blank!"
'John Kidley' is being stalked by a predatory widow, (a widow of wealthy husbands many times over). 'Mickey Hawkins' is a Texan heiress, who wants to marry her boyfriend 'Henry Munch,' (but her father is determined that she marry into royalty). To solve both their problems, Mickey Hawkins and John Kidley decide to marry, but will they ever find love together? When test results get mixed up, multi-millionaire hypochondriac John Kidley, (played by Bob Hope) is told that he only has a month to live. He dumps his fiancee, 'Juno Marko' (Gale Sondergaard), and heads for the Swiss spa of "Bad Gaswasser," where he meets a young Texas heiress, Mickey Hawkins, (played by Martha Raye). Mickey has been betrothed to the fortune hunting 'Prince Smirnow,' (played by Alan Mowbray), but is in love with a bus driver from back home, Henry Munch, (played by Andy Devine). Believing he's dying, (and wanting to help out) John suggests that he and Mickey get married, planning on leaving her his fortune, so she can then marry who she wants when he's gone. On their honeymoon, with Henry along as a chaperone, the couple fall in love for real, (although, of course, they don't realize it right away). Eventually, John bests the Prince in a duel, Henry and Juno get engaged, and, John and Mickey live happily ever after.
