It is easy to focus your smartphone when shooting video or taking a photo. Touching the screen guides the camera's focus. But to take your images to the next level StoryGuide’s Drew Keller shows you how to use the manual focus and focus lock to get great shots every time.
Besides exposure, focus is probably the most important part of capturing compelling images. If your shot is out of focus, your viewer will tune out. It doesn't matter how hard you work to get the shot because if it is soft it is useless. No amount of post processing will make an out of focus shot sharp. Knowing how to force your smartphone to focus on your subject ensures you create images that tell your story.
When shooting either photos or videos with your smartphone you can create visual relationships by using the depth of field to draw your viewer’s attention. The secret to getting your main subject sharp and the background out of focus is understanding how to manage the focusing distance – the distance from the lens to the subject. The closer your camera lens gets to the object you’re shooting, the more ‘out of focus’ (or softer) your background will become, especially if you are shooting in low light.
