Crime Scenes
Types of Evidence Found
What are the types of forensic evidence commonly found at crime scenes?
Evidence can be divided into:
Physical vs. Non-Physical
Real vs. Demonstrative
Known vs. Unknown
Individual vs. Class
Physical Evidence can be casings, fingerprints, hair, fibers, paint chips, and blood. This type of evidence can be collected and examined. Non-physical evidence is generally non-tangible, such as smell, odors.
Real evidence is generated by criminal activity, and demonstrative evidence are models, or things created for courtroom purposes (photos, diagrams).
Known evidence can be traced back with certainty to the specific source, and unknown evidence, the source is not known prior to lab testing.
Individual (DNA, Fingerprints) and Class (fibers, hair (without shaft) are also presented.
